Malaysia - Butterworth [Jul. 23rd, 2006|05:52 pm]
[music |Mariah Carey - My All]

Malaysia - Butterworth

Butterworth is pretty near to the Thai border already. The main attraction of this place would be either Penang or Langkawi. Butterworth is actually part of Penang, but on mainland Malaysia...

There is a very frequent ferry service from Butterworth onwards to Penang for a very very cheap price... Probably be staying 2 nights in Penang and 2 nights in Langkawi before heading off to Hat Yai, cross the thai border.. To more beach resorts!!

Will be staying at the Hong Ping Hotel which is a popular backpackers place right in the middle of town..  http://www.penangnet.com/hongping/

At Langkawi, i will be staying at the Zackry Guesthouse - http://www.hostelz.com/hotel/3721-Zackry-Guesthouse .. 2 nights would be 8 USD :) Very cheap!! :)

Malaysia - Kuala Lumpur

My first stop from the train would be Kuala Lumpur. Kualu Lumpur has 3 sectors which has the highest concentration of Hostels. They are Chinatown, Puduraya, and Bukit Bintang. According to most guides, Bukit Bintang is the best place to stay in KL and is the main place for backpackers in KL. There are alot of Major shopping malls around with lotsa hawkers for food.

I've decided to stay here in KL. http://www.redpalm-kl.com/ Its a 5 minutes walk to the monorail, so the train station and stuff are easily accessible. Costs $11 SGD per night there. Very good price!

Things to do in KL
1. EAT!!
2. Check out the usual stuff like Petronas Towers, KL Tower
3. KL Lake Garden
4. Jalan Petaling Night Market

I will be spending total 2 nights at KL. Might be going Cameron Highlands after KL before hopping back on the train...

Singapore to Malaysia [Jul. 11th, 2006|01:58 pm]
[music |Hilary Duff - Come Clean]

Singapore - Malaysia - Thai Border

Been reading up on the rail system within Malaysia, and onwards to Bangkok in Thailand. Singapore to Bangkok is a hefty 1,946 km. Continuous train travel would take 48 hours, but of course i will be stopping at many many places :) Just nice, 2007 is the Visit Malaysia 2007 year, where they celebrate 50 years of nationhood.. should be a good leg :)

Places i intend to stop at.
  • Kuala Lumpur
  • Ipoh
  • Butterworth
  • From Butterworth i will take a ferry to the island nearby which is Penang :)
  • Langkawi (Penang has daily ferries to Langkawi) - http://www.langkawi-ferry.com/  RM 85 return ticket. 2.5 hrs ferry.
  • Hat Yai (Just crossed the Thai border, From Hat Yai, you will be able to take a transport to Phuket/Krabi)
Estimate this leg of the journey, from Singapore to the Thai border via Malaysia will take roughly 14 days. :) Will be planning it in more details soon..

Price wise, its rather cheap, provided i purchase the tickets in Malaysia itself. I can purchase in Singapore too, but will cost the same, except in SGD instead of RM. 2.2 times more. Haha. Will be taking a 1st class seat since prices are so good.

Journey
Train/Seat Type
Fare
Johor - Kuala Lumpur EKSPRES RAKYAT/ASC - Superior Class
RM 68
Kuala Lumpur - Ipoh
EKSPRES LANKAWI/ASC - Superior Class
RM 18
Ipoh - Butterworth EKSPRES LANKAWI/ASC - Superior Class RM 17
Butterworth - Hat Yai EKSPRES LANKAWI/ASC - Superior Class RM 19

Total will be RM 122 which is approximately $55 SGD! Thats cheap! ASC seats are rather comfortable too! Heres a picture, credit to the Malaysian rail website

This journal will be updated frequently with itineries and travel details as he plans for the trip of his lifetime - Overland from Singapore to London, thru South East Asia, China, Russia, thru Poland, Germany, Belgium.. and finally onwards to London :)

Here's a nice quote to share..

"To my mind, the greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time, to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar it is taken for granted"
